Sense of Self
by Joel Metzger
Sense of self: how I come home to base in this play of hide and seek, how I know myself and what I know myself to
be. The sense of self is the starting block of the game of life. The Minimum Daily Requirement that I demand from each
day.
By Sense of Self, I mean a tactile feeling of who I am, different than thoughts, actions, memories, hopes, concepts,
worries, imaginings, and concerns for my body. It is my center, without which I am a massive wheel rapidly spinning with
powerful momentum ... and no axle. Dangerous!
Without sitting still on the center hub, all I can know are the spinning spokes. If I do not know stability, I frantically grab
at anything resembling safely. If I accept my love, I can plant my feet and reach out. Be careful -- I'm likely to tickle anybody
who walks by.
A sense of self changes my days and replaces waiting with appreciating.
A sense of self transforms intimacy and changes it from addiction to warmth.
A sense of self sanctifies desire and raises it from desperation to aspiration.
A sense of self centers my attention and converts me into a monogamous beau! I love who I discover myself to be.
I find a sense of self only within myself, not in my actions and identities, for within myself is the only place I am.
