The Mind, Body & Soul Network

Reverend Bill Morin

It is finally almost upon us this Y2K event that has been making some people lose their sense of reality and common sense. I can't help but wonder if the same panic transpired when the calendar turned over from year 999 to 1000. Nobody of course is still around to substantiate that (except of course for the giant California redwoods and they aren't talking). I heard a pretty bad joke awhile that I simply must share with you. What caused the dark ages? Give up? The answer is Y1K. I told you it was bad. Since I inflicted that horrible humor on you I shall now gaze into my crystal ball and make predictions for the coming year.

Let's begin with politics, which surely is the most boring subject and the one I shall spend the least amount of time on. The Republican Party will maintain control of the Senate while losing 2 seats. The Democratic Party will regain control of the House of Representatives. As for the presidential race, it is going to be much closer than most people would imagine (or like). My prediction is that George W. Bush shall be elected president by a very small electoral margin but that Bill Bradley will win the popular vote. Enough of politics.

Let's move on, shall we? Weather patterns will continue to confound the experts this year. It will be cooler than normal in the southeast US during the first quarter. More snow than normal will fall in Georgia and South Carolina. The Northeast shall have one of the coldest winters on record, particularly in February. The mid west will have record amounts of snowfall. The southwest stays pretty much as it's supposed to. The Pacific Northwest looks to be rainier than usual but with somewhat higher temperatures. May brings devastating twisters to the Texas-Oklahoma border area. Chicago will be particularly hard hit by blizzards.

The contest for the most annual snowfall shall be between Buffalo, NY and International Falls, MN. The spring for the southeast states is a delight until early June when flooding hits parts of North Carolina and Tennessee. The summer shall be the hottest it has been in 10 years in South Florida especially late July and early August. 11 tropical storms will form and 6 will become hurricanes, two of those quite powerful. One looks like it will just miss Cape Hatteras and the other aims its sights at Bermuda. Florida shall be spared the brunt once again. The upper plains states will be dryer than usual. Fall looks fairly peaceful except in the area of Louisiana and Eastern Texas. Mid September looks like a mess of thunderstorms and lightning strikes.

Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain will develop severe bronchitis which could become pneumonia. If she doesn't abdicate she at least will have to cut back on her royal duties. Boris Yeltzin, president of Russia shall not see the end of his term in office. There shall be a new pope before the year ends. More powerful quakes will continue to rock China, Taiwan and Turkey. In the Southern Hemisphere Chile looks quite vulnerable for a strong quake(at least a 6.8). Avalanches plague the Swiss Alps in the spring. A plague will infect thousands in Mexico this Summer but will mostly be contained.

Two Hollywood legends( a man and a woman)shall pass into history. The box office take at US/Canada movie houses will approach 8 billion dollars. No film will dominate at this years' Academy Awards with the most getting 4. An herb that grows wild on the Chinese mainland(much like our dandelions) hold the key to curing AIDS. It will be come upon quite by accident. Technology shall continue to progress at incredible speed. Computers continue to get smaller, lighter and cheaper to make. Health and fitness make a comeback of sorts in the USA. The religion known as Falun-gong shall grow and become the salvation of millions of people. Even the tyranny of The Chinese government can't stop it.

There shall be no Armageddon this year. The planet and its inhabitants will continue to live and hopefully evolve. The future holds mysteries for us all. I recently saw a poster that really stuck in my mind. Under 3 bolts of lightning was the caption: "The best way to predict the future is to create it." Let us hope that is exactly what we all strive to do.
